Different people see romantic relationships differently. The dictionary tells us that a relationship is a simple connection or an association. However a romantic relationship is never quite as simple. The meaning of such a relationship can even be indefinable at times. Also, because a relationship is made out of two different people, things are rarely considered perfect. This is fine and disagreements are to be expected. But there are still things you can do to make it a healthy relationship. It takes more effort from both parties, but if you are able to avoid major break ups and blow ups, wouldn't it be worth it?

The following are some things you can try to develop in order to maintain a healthy relationship between you and your partner.

Trust
Trust is essential in a healthy relationship and is something that the both of you will have to build together. It doesn't always come naturally but it is 100% necessary in a romantic relationship. More often than not, trust can be the root or the reason for every argument and discussion of couples. It is also the root of jealousy and it's something that you will have to weed out as soon as possible.

Honesty
Honesty goes hand in hand with trust. It's hard to trust someone if they aren't being honest with you. In case you didn't already know, honesty is always present in a strong relationship. I'm not saying that you need to report everything that you do to your significant other. But honesty is telling the truth and not hiding things that should be known by everyone involved in the relationship. It may sometimes seem like a good idea to lie to ‘protect the other person', but you should give your partner that choice instead of always thinking and doing what's best for her.

Compromise
You need to have give-and-take in a romantic relationship. Things get bad really fast when a relationship turns into a power struggle, with one person fighting to get his or her way all the time. Learn to compromise and your relationship will be a healthy one. Remember though that moderation is the key to life. If you're the only one compromising all the time then there's something wrong with your relationship.

Separate Identities

Even though you are in a romantic relationship together with a special person, that doesn't mean that you have both turned into one person. You are still two different individuals. In a true healthy relationship you should never feel that you can't be yourself. This is where compromise comes into play again.

Mutual Respect
Mutual respect in a relationship means that you both value each other and that you would never challenge the other person's boundaries. Respect also means acceptance. And for you to be able to respect one another, you need to first accept one another. Respect one another and your relationship will be able to avoid petty issues such as who paid for dinner the other night, or who has a better job and earns more money.

Support
When you're in a relationship, this means that you have someone around to support you and vice versa. This kind of belief and support should stay through the highs and lows of the relationship. If your girlfriend decides to avoid you just because you're having some problems with your work instead of providing you with the support you need, perhaps you need to consider that your relationship isn't working out the way it should be. In an ideal and healthy relationship, you should both be there for one another.
